The St. Agnes School program can be concisely summed up with the initials S.A.S. These three letters summarize the educational focus for our Catholic community: Spirit – Academics – Service. The first word in this maxim refers to the Spirit of our Lord. As a community, the fruits of the Holy Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) – provide a foundation to living a life of heroic virtues.
The work of the Spirit permeates all that we do. And while the pride we feel for our community is on display each and every day, that excitement reaches a new level each November as our school celebrates “Spirit Week”. This year’s festivities began on Saturday, November 9 as our school honored a very special graduate who by both passion and profession, has earned the unique distinction of Alumna of the Year. I am pleased to share that Katie (Gentile) Wilder from the Class of 1994, received this noteworthy recognition. As the Advancement Director for our school and a member of the Parish Council, I couldn’t imagine any alumni who on daily basis, lives out the mission of our community. Congratulations Katie!
As Monday arrived, our students were invited to design their most outrageous, flashy and creative head wear for “Crazy Hat Day”. Even the teachers got into the fun as each homeroom designed a special hat for their teachers. On Tuesday, our campus seemed to reveal a population explosion as we celebrated “Twins/Triplets Day” where the students dressed in identical outfits with selected peers. Wednesday was just as wild. Our students arrived to campus wearing their uniforms backwards and following a class schedule in reverse order. And just to make “Wacky Wednesday” even more unusual, our 8th grade students served as the “teachers” to our younger students for a class period during the day. “Thankful Thursday” arrived as our students created a post-it note collage in the shape of a cross. Each of these notes offered a brief message of something for which the students are thankful. In addition, our BEARS donated 110 winter coats for our school-wide collection for the Happy Helpers for the Homeless charity in Halethorpe. And before our joyous week would conclude, the revelry reached its high point as our community enjoyed “Spirit Friday”. This festive day saw our students adorned in school colors as our annual spirit rally occurred. The 8th grade vs. Faculty volleyball game and the three staff members who bravely accepted a cream pie in the face from three selected students, served as the centerpieces for this event. And before this jovial day would end, our students attended our 3rd annual “Science Night”. We are grateful for the members of the UMBC Chemistry Club for once again sharing hands-on scientific experiments with our young BEARS. It was only fitting that our Catholic school celebrated this final day of Spirit Week with “Science Night” as our faith community celebrated the feast of St. Albert, the patron saint of scientists.
Although the eyes of faith may reveal things that we may not see, during this week, it was easy to recognize that St. Agnes School is a special place where our young people live, love and learn within the Light of Christ. What a week! We are truly blessed!!
