Every Week is "Spirit Week" at St. Agnes!
I will often speak of the unique spirit that exists within our charming little schoolhouse which sits proudly on the corner of Old Frederick Road and St. Agnes Lane. The expression of SPIRIT that is prominently represented within the tenets of St. Agnes School (Spirit-Academics-Service) is intended to represent our belief in God’s presence through the movements of the Holy Spirit. And yet, November 10-16 served as a special occasion where the joy of being part of BEAR NATION was on full display. The 2nd Annual St. Agnes “Spirit Week” offered great testimony to the many blessings which fill our community.
This festive week began with our first ever Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday, November 10. Graduates from the 80’s through 2018 competed on the hardwood, not only for a love of “hoops”, but also for the profound gratitude they hold for their childhood school. Then on Sunday, November 11, we continued our celebration of the impressive graduates who spent their formative years learning, leading and loving within the Light of Christ. The alumnae who represent each chapter in our storied history continue to serve as exemplary advocates for all that is good about St. Agnes. And as a fitting component to our annual “Spirit Week” festivities, during the 9:00am mass we honored Sam Bianco from the Class of 1997, as the Alumni of the Year. His work as a theology teacher, campus minister, athletic coach and assistant principal at Mount St. Joseph’s High School has provided direct evidence to the impact that a St. Agnes education can have on one’s life and career. We are immensely proud of all that Sam has brought to his vocational ministry as a Catholic school educator and administrator. After mass that day, we then invited former students and prospective families over to our school Open House event to catch a brief glimpse of what makes S.A.S. such a blessed community. And in keeping with our goal to remain connected to our graduates, on Tuesday we held our first ever “Alumni Happy Hour” at Iamps at Jennings Café. This informal gathering brought together former students as far back as the early 70’s to share in the comradery of being part of the St. Agnes family.
“Spirit Week” also provided an opportunity for our students to share in the excitement of this memorable occasion. To this point, our young BEARS were invited to share in the spirited fun by wearing bizarre head wear on Monday’s “Crazy Hat Day”, unusual hosiery on Tuesday’s “Crazy Sock Day” and a wacky presentation of their school uniform on “Backwards Day”. As the week continued, we used “Thankful Thursday” as an opportunity to express our gratitude to members of our H.S.A. and School Boards, our parish staff and our teachers. Then on Friday, we brought our “Spirit Week” to a fitting conclusion with our bi-annual spirit rally where cheers were shouted, kazoos were played, and the 2nd annual 8th grade vs. faculty volleyball game was filled with spikes, sets and slams. What better way to usher in Thanksgiving than seven days filled with fellowship, faith and family fun?!! And the best thing is that at St. Agnes, each week feels like Spirit Week!!!
