Dynamic Young Leaders for Today's Generation

June 18, 2018

In the past two months, our nation observed the 50th anniversary of the passing of both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. This bicentenary observance served as an occasion in which to honor the influence of these two instrumental civil rights leaders whose lives were centered on the promotion of peace, justice and equality. Simply stated, these men were agents of change who provided hopeful optimism for the oppressed brothers and sisters of our country.

The impact of these two leaders could be heard within the 1968 song “Abraham, Martin and John”. It was the assignation of these historical icons which led the songwriter Dion to reflect on the collective impact of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy in this generational ballad:

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

He freed lotta’ people but it seems the good they die young

I just looked around and he's gone

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?

Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?

And we'll be free

Some day soon, it's gonna be one day

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?

Can you tell me where he's gone?

I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill

With Abraham, Martin, and John

Having recently offered our fond farewell to the Class of 2018, I found myself thinking of the lyrics of this poetic piece. And as I reflect upon the impact that the Class of 2018 has had on St. Agnes School, I know well that just as Martin and Bobby were agents of change for their generation, our recent graduates are certain to become dynamic leaders for our community, our city, our state and our nation. And as Dion said in his 1968 hit, “I just looked around, and they (the Class of 2018) were gone.”

Congratulations to the newest group of St. Agnes graduates: Grace Adkins, Erin Berlin, Peter Ebuwei, Kelly Endler, Kyle Geary, Taylor Gilmore, Darius Harris, Kennedi Henson, Nadia Jackson, Miriana Kelly, Blaire Killikelly, Mikel Lewis, Jonah Matthews, Winfre McWilliams, Sarah Mercer, Amara Njoku, Keith Norris, Benjamin Payne, Jawaan Poquiz, Rayven Short, Keon Smith, LeConte Stover, Brooke Stromberg and Ishaan Vadakoot.
