Today our faith community celebrates the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary. This special event, known for several centuries as Our Lady of Victory, was established in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope Pius V attributed this victory to the intercessions that were invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. Then in 1892, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire month of October as a time to devote ourselves to the blessing of the Holy Rosary. So on this day, we are reminded to bring our intercessions, our struggles and our gratitude through prayer to our Heavenly Mother. Moreover, we use this blessed event as an opportunity to celebrate the gift that the Holy Rosary is to our Catholic faith.
